Dear Esteemed vistors & participants,
We are pleased to have hosted a webinar titled ‘COVID-19 and its impact on medical products and technologies in Africa’, in partnership with Lagos Business School, Nigeria Health Watch, IQVIA, WHO Nigeria.
The talking points of the discussion were:
The Speakers were:
Moderated by: Dr. Chioma Ejekam
DG NAFDAC, Prof Moji Adeyeye – “We had to expedite the approval processes, we actually cut it down to 10 days instead of the months we have”.
” We had about 21 sanitizer companies in Nigeria before COVID-19. Now we have over 110 hand sanitizer companies”.
“It was stated that chloroquine may be effective so I asked a company that used to make chloroquine to make an emergency batch before the first index came into the country. That did not sit well in some quarters but this is what a regulatory agency is supposed to do in terms of emergency”.
Prof. Paul Newton – “there are about 180 different vaccine development products all over the world, there are already 14 in clinical trials. There are hundreds of API’s (active pharmaceutical ingredients) being trialed both repurposed and NCE (new chemical entities) in over 1000 clinical trials”.
Dr Patrick Lukulay – “COVID has amplified the consequences of our inaction, things that we should have done before COVID”.
Prof. Martins Emeje – “Invest in R&D in your country. We can get drugs for any disease from the plants in Nigeria”.
“If you are a scientist in Africa and you aren’t angry, then you aren’t a scientist!”.
