Suppressing maternal mortality in Sub Saharan African Region

Development of Quality Risk Management framework for the supply of Misoprostol to Sub Saharan African Region

Project Overview

The CIFF Misoprostol Project was funded by the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF) through Population Services International (PSI) and implemented in partnership with FHI 360, academic institutions, and subject-matter experts across Africa and the United States.

Misoprostol is a life-saving medicine used in the prevention and management of postpartum hemorrhage (PPH), a leading cause of maternal mortality in the region. Variability in manufacturing standards, impurity profiles, and regulatory frameworks has historically made quality assurance complex and costly.

Key Outcomes Achieved

The project addressed the persistent challenge of ensuring consistent quality, safety, and accessibility of maternal medicines (Misoprostol) across Sub-Saharan Africa.
