Implementing Organization: Bloom Public Health and Partners

Project Duration: April 2023 – March 2024

Key Activities Implemented

The Improving Manufacturing Practices for Access to Global Competitiveness and Trade (IMPACT) Project was a strategic initiative designed to strengthen the capacity of Nigerian pharmaceutical manufacturers to achieve World Health Organization Prequalification (WHO-PQ) for locally manufactured antimalarial medicines.

Key activities implemented are as follows:

  1. Launched a national WHO-PQ advocacy programme engaging government agencies, regulators, manufacturers, and development partners.
  2. Conducted baseline assessments and facility visits to pharmaceutical manufacturing companies to identify gaps and readiness for WHO prequalification.
  3. Delivered capacity-building workshops and technical training for pharmaceutical manufacturers.
  4. Facilitated stakeholder engagement among the Federal Ministry of Health, NAFDAC, NIPRD, WHO, PMG-MAN, and other key actors.
  5. Organized an inter-country learning visit to Indonesia to study successful WHO-PQ models and pharmaceutical manufacturing ecosystems.
  6. Supported industry actors in understanding regulatory requirements, quality management systems, and pathways to international certification.

Why This Project Matters

Achieving WHO Prequalification is more than a certification milestone, it is a gateway to international markets, increased confidence in locally manufactured medicines, and stronger health security across Africa.

Through the IMPACT Project, Bloom Public Health Group helped strengthen the systems, knowledge, partnerships, and technical capabilities required for Nigerian pharmaceutical manufacturers to compete globally while advancing the country's long-term vision for pharmaceutical self-reliance and sustainable industrial development.
