What happens when a critical medicine must be recalled immediately, but you cannot trace where it went?

On September 2, 2026, Bloom Public Health and Tiga Healthcare Technologies convened Directors-General of Medicines Regulatory Authorities and key opinion leaders within the health sector across the African continent to tackle one of Public health’s most urgent imperatives: How do we build safer, fully visible, and accountable Pharmaceutical supply chains across Africa?

Under the theme “Securing Africa’s Pharmaceutical Supply Chain: National Track & Trace Architecture — The Next Generation of Pharmaceutical Traceability,” our panel and distinguished attendees moved beyond basic tracking to examine how technology and regulatory policy unite to safeguard lives when a falsified medicine infiltrates the supply chain, when a defective batch must be quarantined instantly, and when life-saving products expire undetected on market shelves.

Without end-to-end visibility, response times are measured in days or weeks, putting patient safety at immense risk. National Track and Trace systems transform this reality. They enable real-time verification, granular visibility, and rapid, targeted intervention when products are compromised or recalled.

A pivotal takeaway from yesterday’s summit was clear: Africa is not a single, monolithic Pharmaceutical market.  Every country operates with distinct regulatory frameworks, manufacturing capacities, import dependencies, and digital infrastructures. A one-size-fits-all model will not succeed. For import-heavy nations, customs and border integration are paramount. For manufacturing hubs, serialisation at the packaging line requires focus. For local distributors and community Pharmacies, lightweight, practical digital tools are essential.

Building resilient traceability demands country-tailored architecture, strong regulatory leadership, robust data governance, and ecosystem-wide collaboration.
