New Lassa Fever Evidence to Shape Vaccine Research and Outbreak Preparedness Across West Africa
October 12, 2026As global health funding faces increasing constraints, one question is becoming more important than ever: How do we ensure that the gains made through donor-supported projects continue long after the project closes?
The Country Representative of Project HOPE, Dr Chidinma Anyanwu, stressed that the end of donor funding should not mean the end of the services and impact created through the project.

He said this in Abuja, Nigeria, at the launch of Project HOPE’s EXALT Project Reference Guide promoting healthy lungs in underserved communities in Niger State, on September 28, 2026,
Bloom Public Health called on implementing partners and stakeholders to commit to project ownership and sustainability planning from the onset. Speaking on behalf of Bloom Public Health was our Regional Communication Manager, Nneka Acholonu Egbuna.
Supported by the Stop TB Partnership, the EXALT project has contributed to increasing the number of people screened for Tuberculosis, Asthma and Pneumonia, improving the number of cases detected, upgrading primary healthcare centres, and strengthening community-centred approaches to healthcare.
Dr Inua Junaidu, Executive Director of the Niger State Primary Health Care Development Agency, noted that the intervention has strengthened primary healthcare facilities in the state.
Project HOPE Regional Director, Steven Neri, highlighted that integrating TB services into primary healthcare and sustainable financing are keys to effectively controlling TB.
These achievements are important. But the bigger question is: How do we sustain them? Sustainability must be part of how health programs are designed, implemented and transitioned.
The launch brought together WHO, the Federal Ministry of Health, Niger State Ministry and other state stakeholders, development partners, and Project HOPE leadership to reflect on how to strengthen and sustain health systems.
Bloom Public Health was represented by our Business Development Director, Dr Ifeanyi Ume, and the Regional Communication Manager.
